10 And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!”
Nehemiah 8:10 NLT
In this passage, Israel’s re-introduction to the law causes sincere regret and sadness for abandoning God’s way. In the same way, your wellbeing landscape may look bleak. Satan may be firing his big guns of temptation and rationalization. The relationship with a spouse or loved one may have taken another bad turn and you don’t feel as if you have the strength to try any more. All your resistance to your compulsions may be hanging on a thread and the coping mechanisms (healthy and unhealthy) you have developed may not seem to work or you choose to not use them.
This passage is an encouragement for that time. The joy of the Lord is your strength! God’s pleasure at the desire to take one more step for the cause of emotional wellness can motivate us to keep holding on. Because I know that when I take that next step - make that choice not to look/objectify/lust/connect/drug/drink/get angry, get a sponsor/mentor, work the next step if in recovery, call my accountability partner, attend a support meeting and share honestly, mentor/sponsor someone else, journal my feelings - I build another strand in the connection I have with Christ.
